Wow, @twitter-140697516:disqus -- you're right! I had no idea I played such a role in your social media experience -- cool! It sure made me smile to read your story and see how you're all comfy and familiar with social media now. I'm really glad we connected as we did...you're amazing!

Sue, I did the same thing when I first signed up for twitter. Didn't "get" it at all. And as I mentioned in the post, was totally put off by the shouters, pushers and pimps. But am so glad I stuck with it as have met some fantastic people and built some wonderful relationships that wouldn't have happened if I hadn't perserved.
Great to be connected with you Sue and thanks for dropping by and sharing your experiences and views.

I remember losing my social media virginity, too. Well, I'm thinking specifically of Twitter. I signed up and did nothing with it for a long time. Then when I started blogging, I knew I should promote my posts there, so I started spending time there.

In the beginning, I too ran into the Shouters, Pushers and Pimps, but after a couple of visits, I stumbled on the lovely @monagrayson:twitter (She does not know I lost my social media virginity to her, but if I had to name someone, it would be her.) She was full of positive energy, responded to my tweets and directed me to other wonderful people.

Fast-forward to this summer, and I ended up connected with you, Ali! I really love social media now. So much potential for discovery, connection, community, etc.

Great post Ali... humorous, but with a very valid point.

Looks like the blog is going well... hardly surprising with great content like this. Must stop by more often.

All the best,

Calvin!

Thanks Niall. Now that I know how to avoid and deal with the noise of the shouters, pushers and pimps I am loving it.

Ali, Great take on the social media landscape. I'm delighted you got past the noise and stuck with it = you are now starting to see results. Thanks for sharing, Niall

Hi Julie, I think you make a really important point - it is so important to know why you are on each social media site and who you want to mix with. Makes it so much easier.

Hi there, Ali! I love this post! It parallels to some extent my experience. I came in and enjoyed Twitter for awhile and then left for a bit and felt like no one knew me anymore. Then I changed my strategy and started rebuilding my connections and deleting people that fell into the categories you mentioned.

I always loved social media though -- but just needed to think about the conversation piece again more fully. Now it is so much fun again... I love people in general and connecting across an ocean just like over the back fence is delightful!
