Hello Ali Davies, first of all i would like to put my hats off to you....This is because you have written a fabulous post on how to save the family from the impact of business...The very last point on,"think about the family before taking a business decision",is the important one here..

Thnaks Ben. Glad you liked them. Designing business and family life around core values and what is most important is more likely to create a more fulfilling outcome than trying to balance everything.

I really like these tips Ali. I think we all struggle with the balance of work and life sometimes but I like how you suggest we design rather than balance. That's definitely something I'm going to take away from reading this. Thanks

Sharon, it is a lovely that you share those sort of conversations with your daughter. Communication in families is so critcal for all members to understand each other and what is happening in each others lives outside of the family. Kids learning about the ups and downs of business, as long as it is pitched appropriately for their age, is very valuable learning on all sorts of levels.

Ali, I think sharing is a big thing to pick up on your point of treating your business and family life as separate. Sharing issues and success with your family are important as they are part of your life. My daughter (she is only 9) asks me most days when we are at dinner 'well mummy how was your day'. Now I share a little that she understands, but I recognise that it is important to her because I am asking her about hers and is there anything she needs help with that for her to ask and me to answer with something constructive makes her feel important. If we share a little with those that love us (old and young) we are communicating and this can only be good for everyone.
